Born to a single mother in Mankato, Minnesota, John Cowens (also known as Kodiak) is now one of the best special operatives in the FBI.

Kodiak stood out from the start. He matured much faster than most of his peers, reaching a height over six feet around the same time other boys began to think that maybe all girls didn’t have cooties after all. He also grew a think pelt of fur all over his body and developed thick dark nails. Realizing that he was much stronger than most people, Kodiak decided to become a member of the police force, so he could put that strength to good use.

Over time it became clear that his talents were wasted in Mankato and he left for a bigger city and more challenging work. He joined the FBI and become one of their state sponsored superheroes. Eventually, they stationed him in Millennium City.

Thanks to his dedication to protecting people, Kodiak easily developed a friendship with Defender, the leader of the Champions. He’s incredibly supportive of all the Champions’ efforts, and even the efforts of some of the lesser known crime fighters (who don’t always operate within the strict letter of the law, although always within the spirit).

About Kodiak

He looks like a giant bear of a man, and sometimes he even acts like one: grumpy, snarly, and intimidating. In reality, he’s more like a teddy bear. A teddy bear dedicated to crime fighting, with incredible strength, and the ability to break you in two if he thinks you deserve it. He is also a great man to have at your side during a fight.
