Like peanut butter and jelly, cookies and milk, cheese and crackers, Dr. Black and Dr. White always go together.
Certainly they went together on their honeymoon (it would have been odd not to, really) to Transylvania. The two were intrigued by things mystical and occult but they hadn’t really believed in any of that stuff. It had been purely academic. And, after all, as Cultural Anthropology and Folklore grad students at UCLA, they could even write a paper or two about their honeymoon! Two for the price of one, as it were. On a student budget, that was irresistible.
What Steve and Judy, as they were known then, hadn’t counted on was being kidnapped by the locals and sacrificed to some sort of ancient demon. Fortunately for them, the demon took one look at them, said, “They are not for me,” and vanished.
Seeing as the locals were distracted and the sacrifice was apparently not happening, Steve and Judy made good on their escape and returned home post haste. However, life as starving grad students did not return to normal for them. They could read the auras of others, sometimes even the thoughts of others. Realizing they were developing mystical powers (after all, they certainly had the academic training to recognize all the signs) the two decided to shift their focus of study to the occult.
They apprenticed for a time with San Francisco-based wizard Eldritch, and then decided that their hometown of LA could use them as superheroes.
Unfortunately, the two of them discovered they were in over their heads battling the worst and wickedest of Los Angeles. However, they did some research and decided that UNITY would be a perfect place for them. They could team up with other superheroes who would balance out their own abilities. They applied for membership and were soon accepted.
This superheroing couple has a strong sense of right and wrong. While they will gladly fight crime, neither one will take a life. Judy, Dr. White, even believes that killing would cause them to lose their mystical powers (“After all, that demon wouldn’t take us because we were pure of heart!” she’s been known to say.)
Steve, aka Dr. Black, loves the whole aura of mystery and secrecy around mysticism, and had been known from time to time to exaggerate the drama of a situation just a tad (“Stand back, mortal. The magic we do now would destroy your mind if you tried to comprehend it!”). Judy, on the other hand, is eminently practical and tends to take the air out of her beloved’s inflated sense of melodrama on a regular basis.
The two are devoted to each other, and only slightly less devoted to their UNITY teammates. Judy in particular has been making an effort to socialize awkward supergenius Mentiac.
Together, they’re a great pair. Hopefully the two never get separated! That could be dangerous for both of them.
